For the second year in a row, Best Buy has been recognized by Office Depot for leadership in green purchasing for our goods not for resale – or products we use to run our business – think office supplies, furniture and cleaning solutions. Best Buy is the only retailer to receive this distinguished award.

Award winners were selected from Office Depot’s largest 1,000 customers based on how much these customers invest in sustainable products. Office Depot calls this “green spend,” a calculation based on products that save energy, avoid waste or use safer chemicals. Green spend is also defined as products with third-party certified eco-labels such as FSC, which ensures paper is from responsibly managed forests, and EPA’s Safer Choice, which denotes products meeting federal regulations for safer chemistry.

In partnership with Office Depot, Best Buy’s green purchasing rate rose 16 percent over the past year to an all-time high of 54 percent due to conscientious purchasing of products like greener janitorial chemicals and lower flame retardants in furniture. In addition to greening the purchase of products used in our operations, Best Buy is also developing a more comprehensive chemicals management program to be launched in the upcoming year.
