Get ready to say “OK, Google” even more frequently.
Today, Google announced that Best Buy’s Insignia Wi-Fi Smart Plug will work with the Google Assistant on Google Home, along with Pixel and Android phones.
The smart plug already lets you control most of your electronics – like lights, air-conditioners and kitchen appliances – through the Insignia Connect app on an iOS or Android device. With the app, you can set timers, daily and weekly schedules for almost everything you plug in.
Soon, controlling your smart plug will be as easy as talking to the Google Assistant on Google Home, the first Insignia product to do so. In the coming days, you can update your plug via the Insignia Connect app and it will then integrate it into the Google Assistant’s ecosystem that already includes smart products like Philips Hue lights and Nest thermostats.
Imagine coming home at night, and instead of turning on your lamps by hand or via the app, all you have to do is say, “Okay Google, turn on the lights.”
The Google Assistant on Google Home can do much more than turn on your lamps. It can answer virtually any question, from weather to traffic info. It also lets you play music via Spotify, Google Play, Pandora and YouTube and stream your favorite shows and movies via Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra – all without touching a button.
