With the holiday season upon us, many families will be finding ways to make new traditions — and continue old ones — this year.
The pandemic has changed how many of us will celebrate Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. But whether you live across the country or down the block, there are still ways to come together and enjoy the holidays with loved ones.
Some creative thinking and innovative devices can help close the distance between family and friends while staying safely apart. From virtual gatherings to online gifting, technology gives us the opportunity to stay connected during a holiday season like no other.
Here are a few tips from a Best Buy expert.
Host a virtual celebration
Traveling might be tricky this year, but there are still ways to celebrate together. For example, you can host a virtual Thanksgiving feast or unwrap presents together via video calls or smart displays like Facebook Portal or Amazon Echo Show. It’s a great way to make sure grandma and grandpa are still able to take part in the festivities and watch their grandchildren’s faces light up as they open each gift.
“The great thing about going into the holiday season is that although we are apart, the access to tech can make it simple to see someone face to face,” said Sayde Christ, a Best Buy Home Expert in Los Angeles. “Setting up tech like smart displays in your home makes it easy to share life’s big moments with loved ones who we might not otherwise get to see in person this year.”
Shop safely and conveniently
This season, there are many ways to safely get gifts to your loved ones in time for the holidays. At Best Buy, we kicked off our Black Friday deals earlier than ever, and we’ll have more deals going all throughout the season.
We have introduced enhanced safety measures in our stores and provided our customers with more ways to get your tech. When shopping online, you can choose from contactless curbside pickup, store pickup, same-day or next-day delivery options.
If you’re not able to exchange gifts with loved ones in person, you can have gifts shipped directly to them or arrange for them to pick up items at their nearest Best Buy store. Or, if you’re shipping a gift from BestBuy.com you can send a gift message that will be emailed to your recipient once the package arrives on their doorstep.
Get festive with holiday meals
‘Tis the season to dust off your holiday recipes and bring out the KitchenAid Stand Mixer and your other favorite kitchen appliances. From cookies to pies and other traditional holiday dishes, cooking or baking is a fun way to bring people together.
Order your ingredients and schedule time to virtually prepare your favorite holiday recipes with mom or siblings, even if you can’t be in the kitchen together this year. It’s a great way to make the best of a difficult time by putting a modern twist on a treasured family tradition.
Spread cheer to all that are near
With the clever use of LED smart lights and smart speakers, you can help spread some holiday cheer while maintaining social distancing. We even sell Twinkly Smart Lights, which are specifically designed for holiday decorating.
You can also use smart plugs and outdoor smart plugs to easily control that holiday magic straight from your phone. And you can schedule the lights to automatically turn on and off at certain times each day. “We are seeing more and more people decorating their homes early, which is a great way to ramp up this holiday season,” Sayde said. “It brings communities together and families can have a more traditional holiday experience, even in the pandemic.”
